Avoid constipation: Can constipation lead to weight gain?

Wondering how to avoid constipation? You have probably looked in the mirror more than once and seen that your stomach is more prominent than normal, especially on the days when you suffer from constipation and feel bloated. You weigh yourself and realize that you have gained a few kilos. How is it possible? Can constipation lead to weight gain?

We will talk about this topic today. We are sure we can help you solve this recurring problem!

Can constipation lead to weight gain?

The answer is no, but we will analyze all aspects to understand why.

We start with an example. It’s been a week since you were last able to go to the bathroom regularly. In other words, you have problems with  constipation. You notice that your clothes fit much tighter around your stomach. Your weight also says that you weigh a little more. So what is the reason for this?

This weight gain is not due to accumulated fat, but rather the elements stored in the intestine that one should have gotten rid of in the form of feces. Food waste is what causes the inflammation you have. Toxins that also increase fluid retention.

We “feel” the weight gain we get due to constipation, but it is not real. When the intestinal system regulates itself, the extra kilos will disappear.

While it is true that your stomach will look more bloated, it is not fat or muscle, but a swelling caused by the storage of feces.

Constipation will not strengthen the weight gain as you might think, which is why your figure does not look different, nor do you need to buy new clothes. However, one should know that constipation is not healthy either, and the “extra pounds” one has due to the presence of accumulated feces can lead to serious problems.

Stay healthy to avoid constipation

Going to the bathroom regularly and keeping your bowels clean is also an important factor in taking care of your overall health. This allows you to better cleanse your body, freeing you from toxins and other harmful elements such as increasing fluid retention.

So, when following a diet to lose weight, it is important to remember that the amount of fiber, fluids, fruits and vegetables will not only help you lose weight but also allow you to avoid constipation. Having a normal bowel movement will be a part of your health.

Weight gain and constipation

If you suffer from severe constipation, you can see a weight gain of up to 0.9 to 1.4 kg for a while. There is an increase in weight, but again it is not a real increase. As long as this problem is regulated, the excess weight will disappear.

Experts say that a direct proof that you are gaining weight is your body mass index (BMI). Keep an eye on the volume at the waist, arms…. Sometimes it tends to happen if you eat poorly for a few days or weeks.

Too much sugar, too little water and fiber. As a result, your body will react by producing fluid to eliminate the excess, and you will look more bloated.

However, it is not real fat. This temporary weight gain will only last for a few days if you start having a better diet and drink more fluids.

First, we should mention that women are the ones who tend to experience constipation and fluid retention the most. Some days we look really bad in front of the mirror and we feel bloated… But  by following the right steps, we can assure you that you can prevent this from happening.

One just needs to change some habits and concentrate on what is needed to help oneself a little more. Think about how stress or daily duties mean that you sometimes have to stress a little extra, and when you “have to go” you prefer to do it later. If you do this often, your health will be the one that ends up suffering from it. Notice what you should do:

1. The importance of breakfast

Breakfast is a key factor in fighting constipation. It is a formula that never fails and that one should keep in mind. Include a fruit, oats, and a hot beverage. How about making yourself a cup of oatmeal with a few pieces of kiwi and grapes? Then a hot tea of nettle can be great if you drink it slowly with a little honey.

2. Avoid constipation with aloe vera and orange tea

The combination of aloe vera and orange is an excellent remedy to combat constipation. Here’s how:

  • 30 g aloe vera (the transparent gel from the inside of the plant)
  • 150 ml of warm water
  • An  orange

Here’s how to do it

  • Heat water in a teapot, and when it boils, add aloe vera. Let it dissolve.
  • Meanwhile, squeeze the juice from the orange.
  • Finally, you just need to mix the orange juice with the warm aloe vera infusion and drink this on an empty stomach. Delicious!

3. Avoid constipation with moderate physical exercise

It is very healthy to walk for half an hour a day, or to take a swim… If you stay active, it will make your intestines move, which is necessary to strengthen the right stool. And remember, you will not only fight constipation, but you will also take care of your health.

4. Eat an early and light dinner

It is important not to overfill the stomach with excess food in the evening. A heavy digestion at the end of the day causes the intestines to become sluggish and collect residues that will be very difficult to get rid of the next morning. A light dinner a few hours before bedtime is ideal.

5. Fiber, vegetables and liquids

It’s the same formula as always. A diet rich in fresh  vegetables (if they are raw, even better), fiber, and plenty of fluids will help regulate bowel movements. You can also try smoothies based on beets and carrots. They are delicious and effective!
