Thousands of people are depressed without knowing it - are you one of them?

It may be hard to believe, but  there are many people who experience being extremely depressed without knowing it. They have no idea about the weight of their negative emotions that are constantly buzzing around in their head.

However, it is a very real problem that many primary caregivers and psychologists face in treating the associated symptoms of depression. Muscle pain, bad mood, anger, self-hatred, mood swings or contempt for everything around them are symptoms associated with depression.

Being depressed without knowing it

People may realize that something is wrong, without knowing it for sure. Life can seem abnormal and even strange, and everything feels like it is going in the opposite direction of what you expect. Nevertheless, they continue to move forward. People do this because they have created defense mechanisms that make them adapt to these feelings instead of facing them.

Thus , people calm their emotions, drown their sorrows, cover stress with anxiety, and their anxiety, in turn, with more psychosomatic pain. It may surprise you, but it is a fact: hidden depression exists, as well as the silent suffering of the thousands of people who experience being depressed without knowing it.

Here are the main symptoms of this complex situation.

Depressed people gradually develop helplessness and discomfort

Depression often does not have a specific and objective trigger, such as a loss, an intense breakup or suddenly finding yourself unemployed. The most difficult concept to understand is that most depressed people are those who,  at first glance, have “almost” everything that should make them happy : a family, a roof over their heads, a job…

Psychologists often tell us that depressed feelings grow like weeds in a beautiful garden. Then comes a day when it covers everything with its thick undergrowth, thorns and ugly bushes. It is a subtle combination where dissatisfaction, emotional lethargy and the feeling of losing control of our lives mix.

People who experience this type of depression will notice that they almost do not do anything that they enjoy. This is because of the bonds that keep them busy every day that passes. Almost without knowing it,  they have normalized these negative emotions  so much that they are almost expected, and thus they begin to accept them.

Therein lies the problem.

Most symptoms are not related to depression

Patients visit their doctors because they feel exhausted. The doctor will, as usual, take a blood sample. After seeing the results, your doctor will recommend that you easily improve your diet, rest and take vitamins. A few months later, you are back in the doctor’s office because you have severe pain in your back. Your doctor will then recommend that you visit a physiotherapist.

Still, ask for a new appointment because you feel that you are suffering from insomnia and nervousness. This is when the doctor prescribes benzodiazepines. Finally, in an attempt to stop the use of psychotropic drugs and avoid creating an addiction,  the doctor sends us to a psychiatrist who will give the final diagnosis: depression.

On average, it takes around 1 to 2 years to reach the last and correct diagnosis. Meanwhile, the patient does not know what is really going on with them.

This is a very complex problem that we should pay more attention to.

To be in denial

The word “depression” should not scare you. Nevertheless, it tends to create a feeling of being rejected, both by the person who actually experiences it and society itself.

We live in a world that still thinks that “depressed people are sad. It is nothing more than a weak attitude, without knowing how to handle problems. ” Regardless, when a person receives their diagnosis, they feel that the world suddenly stops and that everything changes.

They avoid dealing with their inner demons, loss and their broken heart. They procrastinate in clearing out and organizing a mind full of hidden emotions. Instead, they try to pretend that nothing has happened just to keep working. Fighting depression is not easy for anyone; nevertheless, there will come a time when it will not be possible to move forward.
